An August 24, 1996, Danielle Smalley and Jason Stone were killed by an explosion near Kemp, TX. A spark from the ignition in her truck ignited a cloud of butane gas which had escaped from a ruptured pipeline nearby. Company officials blamed corrosion for the pipeline's failure.
3:26 p.m. - Koch Industries, Inc. 8" pipeline ruptures under Oak Circle roadway, releasing a cloud of butane gas.
Gas cloud drifts down along creek bed.
Smalley and Stone leave home after smelling gas, heading to a neighbor's house to call 911.
Smalley's truck stalls near creek bed, surrounded by butane cloud. As Smalley tries restarting the truck, a spark from the ignition ignites the cloud of gas, causing the deadly explosion.
Both Smalley and Stone die at the scene.
