CHEMO SAVVY Headwear for Hard Times Wearing a scarf and dramatic earrings made me feel like I was making a fashion statement, as opposed to being a victim. Try long dangly earrings. The only thing I wore all the time was earrings. I found earrings to be a great comfort no matter what I wore on my heard. For me, they helped take the place of the hair I had lost. If you're like me, you will lack the energy it takes to shop. It becomes a chore and an embarrassment. You can't help feeling like a criminal, looking furtively around quickly taking off whatever headwear you have on and trying on something off the shelf. Catalog shopping is more fun, takes less energy and is private. Based on my own experiences, I've put together some things people going through this ordeal would want. GOOD-FEEL BETTER Is a public service program sponsored by the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation in partnership with ACS and the National Cosmetology Association, that helps women recovering from cancer handle changes in their appearance resulting from cancer treatment. The program's print and videotape materials are available both to patients and to health professionals. Instructional sessions run by ACS are offered in a number of locations. EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES American
Cancer Society Home medical equipment is available through your American Cancer Society (ACS) when medically necessary as prescribed by a physician. The American Cancer Society may provide patients who have no insurance (i.e. Medicare or private insurance) with equipment listed below on a loan basis at no charge. If the patient has health insurance or Medicare benefits, that provider will be billed and the ACS will pay the co-insurance costs. Deductibles are not covered. An agreement between the ACS and participating equipment companies covers the cost of delivery and pick up. If a patient has preferred provider insurance that is not a company working with the ACS, they are referred to their company for coverage. Items for Loan
