Nutritionists & Nutritional Counseling

Nutritionists are concerned with the nutritive value of the specific food eaten and optimal daily intake, which typically requires supplements. They are interested in feeding the body and in the body working at its best. Typical concerns are: which nutrients an individual is lacking, which foods and supplements boost the immune system, and which foods and supplements contribute to a faster recovery from surgery and other medical treatment. There are several criteria to consider when selecting a nutritionist.

1) Biochemical background: does the nutritionist have an advanced degree in biochemistry?
2) Years of experience.
3) Reputation in the community

Eligibility: There are no restrictions other than ability to pay. Most insurance carriers do not cover nutritionists, although they might if you are referred by your physician. Check with your insurance carrier. (and check to see if nutritionists accept any non-funded cases). Cost usually runs around $150 - $250 for the first visit, which usually lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Follow up visits cost $50 - $75 lasting 30 to 45 minutes.
